Reimagining Specimen tracking for nurses and couriers

As a UX/UI designer with a background in nursing, I brought a unique perspective to the project. My hands-on experience in healthcare settings allowed me to empathise with nurses, couriers, and lab technicians. I combined my domain knowledge with design expertise to create a platform that addressed real-world challenges.

Problems

AustPath, a leading pathology company, sought to revolutionise the specimen collection and tracking process. The project aimed to address inefficiencies, reduce errors, and streamline operations in a space traditionally dominated by manual processes.

  • Manual Processes and Duplicate Documentation:
Specimen collection relied on outdated logbooks and multiple documentation points, leading to inefficiencies and time delays.
  • Missing Specimens:
Tracking specimens through manual systems resulted in frequent errors and lost samples, impacting patient outcomes and operational costs.
  • Mislabelled Specimens:
Errors in labelling during collection created downstream challenges for labs and hospitals, including delays and rework.
  • Incorrect Collection: Procedures
Specimens were often collected incorrectly due to unclear or inconsistent protocols, creating significant risks for patients and delays for clinicians.

Approach

Research & Discovery

  • Conducted workshops with stakeholders to map the life cycle of a specimen, from collection at the bedside to its arrival at the lab.
  • Engaged in user interviews with nurses, couriers, and lab staff to uncover pain points and inefficiencies in the process.
  • Created user personas to capture the needs and behaviours of key stakeholders.
